The first week in September we headed south with our Pionus, Olive, and our cockatiel, Smokie. We watched the website for new goffins and waited. We had already taken classes through PEAC so were approved to adopt and went on the waiting list. We submitted an application, sent photos of our home, did a phone interview and class. Most bird rescues won’t adopt to people who live outside their area. We had plans to spend the winter in the lower 48 so we expanded our search. Bigger birds are not usually sold in Alaska and none were available. We checked with local bird rescues throughout our state of Alaska. We knew we had to have another goffin but also knew we couldn’t replace Bernie. It devastated us and the silence in our home was unbearable. Our 17-year-old Goffin’s Cockatoo, Bernie, died unexpectedly in June 2007. This is the story of a VERY long-distance adoption of a Mickaboo bird, as told by her adoptor. I will only give them to someone who can stay with them and give them the attention most birds need.Powder: Longer Distance Adoption by Carolyn Lewis MUST STAY TOGETHER OR THEY WOULD BE VERY HURT. Also it has become harder to travel with my business and take care of them, my family and friends do not care for them the way I do. we are selling our home and cannot sell our home with them here and I refuse to put them in a cage somewhere offsite. They have been very very loved and we do not want to let them go. He sings Barney, loves to watch Barney, Sings GO MANGO, does flips in his cage, says I like it Outside, talks a lot! Loves to be with people and loves to entertain and talk to people! I open the garage because he likes to be close to the sun. Mango is a4 year old Unbrella and he is our entertainer. I put music on for them and let the door up so they can outside. I have them in the garage most of the time with their toys and ropes and they are very happy. they used to be in my dining room but I wanted to give them more room.
